When it comes to DJ festival events, what audiences expect—beyond the DJ performance itself—is a spectacular production: massive stages, impressive structures, and full-scale lighting, visuals, and sound to create a truly unforgettable experience. These events often involve investments of tens or even hundreds of millions in lighting, sound, and stage equipment. However, until recently, DJ players themselves had not fully kept pace with large-scale sound systems of this level. That gap is exactly what led to the creation of the CDJ Tour-1 and DJM Tour-1 from Pioneer—designed specifically for festival-scale performances to match sound systems worth tens of millions. Let’s take a closer look at what makes them special.
The most striking feature is the foldable 13-inch full-color touchscreen built into both the CDJ Tour-1 and DJM Tour-1. The display can be customized extensively to suit individual workflows, including playlists, up to four simultaneous waveforms, and a wide range of adjustable options. Each unit includes a built-in CPU that supports rekordbox, displaying BPM, key, loop creation, cue points, and effects. A QWERTY keyboard allows for fast track searching, and internet connectivity enables KUVO integration to display tracks currently being performed.
The sunshade above the screen truly lives up to its name. Anyone who has performed outdoors or under intense stage lighting knows how difficult it can be to see a display when light washes over it. With this built-in shade, DJs no longer need to block the light with their hands just to find tracks—an essential improvement for outdoor and festival stages.
ESS Technologies 32-bit D/A Converter
With a 32-bit Digital-to-Analog Converter from ESS Technologies—a renowned professional audio company—the sound quality is significantly clearer, sharper, and more powerful. To put it into perspective:
16-bit audio provides about 96.38 dB,
24-bit reaches 144.4 dB,
and 32-bit can go up to an astonishing 196.22 dB.
This level of output is truly worthy of speaker systems costing tens of millions. Of course, file quality matters as well—MP3 files won’t fully showcase this clarity. For best results, WAV or FLAC files are recommended.
NEUTRIK etherCON® Connectors
Anyone who connects DJ equipment via LAN will appreciate the use of Neutrik connectors. Their locking mechanism eliminates common issues such as loose LAN ports or broken locking tabs that cause intermittent connections. With this design, even if the stage shakes from jumping or accidental impact, the connection remains secure. (It would be great to see this feature added to standard CDJ models in the future.)
AES/EBU Digital Output + Word Clock
This is the world’s first DJ mixer to feature AES/EBU digital outputs, ensuring high-quality audio even over long cable runs. Additionally, the inclusion of a word clock helps maintain precise signal synchronization and minimizes transmission errors. This is a major advancement—sound engineers will especially appreciate this level of accuracy.
XLR/TRS Aux Input
With a wide variety of inputs, you can easily connect external gear such as drum machines, effect processors, synthesizers, and samplers—offering excellent flexibility for live performances. There are also two headphone outputs, allowing multiple DJs to cue tracks without audio overlap.
The price for a full setup—four Pioneer DJ Tour-1 CDJs plus one DJM Tour-1 mixer—comes in at just under 900,000 THB. That’s undeniably expensive, but fitting for true festival-grade equipment. Every component is purpose-built for large-scale stages. It will be exciting to see the Pioneer DJ Tour-1 system used by top DJs on major festival stages and to hear feedback from both DJs and sound engineers. If artists begin requesting this setup for performances, event organizers may have their work cut out for them.
